MY STORY
I was working in the corporate world and looking for a creative outlet. With no formal art education but inspired by a love of textiles, I enrolled onto an evening course at a local college.
During the course, I heard about the Victoria & Albert (V&A) museum’s Inspired by…competition, a competition for adult learners. I entered and the V&A selected me as the winner of the Fashion and Textiles category.
And so began my artistic journey.
Encouraged by the award, I followed my curiosity and explored ceramics, resin and then glass.
In 2013, the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (Nesta) put out a call for art which reflected its mission to encourage innovation in the UK. The call gave me another impetus to get out of my comfort zone. I travelled to Germany, to a 100 year old glass studio run by the fourth generation of the same family, to learn about and work with glass. My work was selected and displayed at Nesta.
In 2017, H Club and H Club Foundation London chose me as the Emerging Creative: Art & Design for my work with glass.
The pandemic prompted a creative pivot and led me back to my roots in textiles.
And in a wonderful twist of fate, in 2021, the V&A selected me to be part of a focus group for its Africa Fashion exhibition which worked with the museum’s Curatorial and Interpretation teams and Learning Department to exchange ideas and provide feedback on the exhibition.
In 2022, I was also filmed as part of a panel discussion by the V&A for its Curating Fashion and Dress course. The film was really well received. And in February 2023, the V&A also showcased it as part of its Fashioning Global Africa course.
So I have now come full circle, re-connecting with the world of textiles with a wealth of inspiration gained along this journey and a sense of excitement for what lies ahead.
